Notes

8Plan review for a proposed electrical installation is a review and audit for compliance with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. It does not approve or certify electrical plans and is not a substitute for the work of a Professional Engineer. Electrical work may not start until plans have been reviewed when the installation involves any one of the following:
  • A three-phase consumer service or standby generation equal to or over 400 A circuit capacity
  • A single-phase consumer service or standby generation equal to or over 600 A
  • A feeder greater than 1000 A
  • An emergency power supply for life safety systems (Section 46), excluding unit equipment
  • Consumer-owned electric power generating equipment or energy storage systems rated over 10 kW (Micro size as defined by the Ontario Energy Board) and operating in parallel with a supply authority system
  • Any installation operating in excess of 750 V, except: pole lines exclusively within the scope of Section 75; the portion of an underground installation between a supply-authority-owned transformer and the related supply-authority-owned switch; equipment replacement as described in Rule 2-010 2) c) and Bulletin 2-11-*
9Online submission is the only option, through the Plan Review Portal. To set up an account: (1) email the ESA Plan Review department at plan.review@electricalsafety.on.ca; (2) indicate the name, email address and phone number of the person to be set up as your Electronic Plan Review online account Administrator; (3) a member of the Plan Review team will contact them to help set up the ESA online account.
10The documentation must also contain the ESA Plan Review Submittal Form and Checklist. All drawings must be full size as originally created. ESA will not accept drawings reduced in size, or any documents that are not legible.
11Examples of acceptable drawings: High O/H Low U/G Plan Review Sample Drawing; HV Pole Line Plan Review Sample Drawing (esasafe.com).
12Partial submissions will not be accepted. Applicants shall have all information available before submitting. As long as the information required by Rule 2-010 is provided, the plan review department audits the drawings for OESC compliance. The applicant then goes through the inspection process.
